When Buck Sitterson arrived in 1968, two women with typewriters managed billing and issued statements yearly.
A decade later, computers managed the accounting, but bottlenecks were common. So when funds ran too short for payroll, Sitterson gathered a briefcase of unpaid insurance claims, drove to Durham and waited while Blue Cross Blue Shield staff members processed them.

"We went out to lunch and when I came back to Greenville that evening I had a check in my pocket," he remembers. "That's how tight we were on money."
During his 30-year career, he had a wide range of responsibitilies, including business affairs, physician relations, legal affairs, safety and outreach.
