Since
its founding in 1951, Pitt County Memorial Hospital has been of central
importance to the history of health care not only in Pitt County but throughout
eastern North Carolina as well. The historical significance of the Hospital
continues to increase as its leadership role in regional health care evolves.
The History Collections of the William E. Laupus Health Sciences Library
is proud to archive materials relevant to the history of this great institution.
Some
texts and images are available electronically at this web-site. All other
texts and images referred to here are housed in the History Collections
of the William E. Laupus Health Sciences Library. Finding aids and indexes
attached to the following descriptions indicate the physical location
of the material.
This site and the indexes presented here were prepared during
the fall of 2001. Materials that have been added to the collection since

Pitt
County Memorial Hospital Community Relations
Mrs.
Billie Jean Trevathan of PCMH Community Relations gathered this impressive
collection of material during her 20-year tenure at the Hospital. Included
are PCMH publications, scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, and photographs
concerning Hospital development between 1942 and 2001. Currently, there
are twelve boxes of material from Community Relations. The Office of
Community Relations became the Office of Government Relations in 2001.
Medical
Center News and Information
Medical
Center News and Information materials fall into two categories. The
first is comprised of photographic negatives and slides representing
events and people connected to ECU School of Medicine and Pitt County
Memorial Hospital (1977-1997). The second category of material is comprised
of news releases from Medical Center News and Information (1980-1988)
relevant to events and people at the Hospital and the Brody School of
Medicine at East Carolina University, and to health concerns across
North Carolina. As of September, 2001, there are 33 boxes of material
in the collection from Medical Center News and Information.
Sitterson,
T. B. "Buck" Collection
T. B. "Buck"
Sitterson served as an administrator at Pitt County Memorial Hospital
from 1968 until 1999. He was first the Hospital's Business Affairs Manager
and Comptroller and later served as Vice President of Risk Management
and Outreach. This collection contains Buck Sitterson's scrapbook concerning
the 1968-1970 PCMH building campaign. It also contains the only known
copy of "Movin On," a PCMH in-house newsletter from 1977 documenting
the move from the Fifth Street Hospital to the new facility on the corner
of Stantonsburg Road and Moye Boulevard in Greenville.
Wayne
C. Williams Collection
Wayne
C. Williams is the author of the book, PCMH, A Tradition of Excellence,
published in 2001 to commemorate Pitt County Memorial Hospital's 50th
anniversary. This collection contains Mr. Williams' manuscripts as well
as material that he gathered while doing research for the book.
Pitt
County Memorial Hospital Additional Materials
Materials from various
Hospital sources are contained in this collection. Among these are interview
transcriptions, images, and other documents used in the production of
the book, PCMH, A Tradition of Excellence. Also included are issues
of the Hospital publication, VIP, as well as examples of other PCMH
publications from 1971-2000.
