The medical school at ECU came into being in 1965, but not until 1967 did it receive state funding.

That's when state Representative H. Horton Rountree, a loyal legislator from Pitt County, along with Representative David Reid, also of Pitt County, won approval for a bill requesting a real budget for the school in the amount of $375,000.

Throughout his term, Rountree campaigned relentlessly for the school, until at last, in 1974, it received approval from higher education leaders.
Local political observers commented that his efforts to ensure its continued financial backing cost his seat in the General Assembly.
