PCMH cardiologist John Rose, M.D. joined the staff of the Fifth Street hospital in the summer of 1977, fresh out of residency in Chapel Hill. "I remember how crowded it was," he says of the old brick hospital. "Many patients weren't admitted to a room - they were admitted to a hall."

Now a respected member of the cardiology faculty at the Brody School of Medicine, Rose has witnessed sweeping changes in medicine and in his adopted hometown. The medical staff used to number about 100; now it's 500. Two cardiologists treated patients; now there are about 30.
