Since his arrival in May, 1977 as chief of surgery at the hospital, Walter J. Pories, M.D. has been trusted as a professional and as a physician leader. He developed the Greenville Gastric Bypass, a surgical treatment for obesity used around the world, and has served as a well respected mediator between the concerns of private practice and academic surgeons.

    His work also includes helping to pioneer the cardiac surgery program, trauma services and organ transplant programs.
