For
most of her 39 years at the hospital, Betty Bailey has worked as a nurse
manager, but she always enjoys spending time with patients. In the early
1960s, taking a trip to the morgue was a strange experience that became
a distinct memory. The morgue was in the basement and every time you went down there the orderly would take a stick and reach up into the ceiling and turn some type of cooler on. Things like that now sound ancient. Despite its lack of space and old-fashioned ways, the Fifth Street hospital had a special charm, she says. There was a sense in that hospital that you loved it when you entered the doors. |
