An early supporter of the medical school, former Governor James B. Hunt has stood by the medical center at many turns. As lieutenant governor he started out a vocal advocate for establishing a school of medicine at ECU before it was a popular project.

     Later, when approval for the Certificate of Need for the West Bed Tower seemed doubtful, he stepped in as governor to assure its approval.
