Progress
sometimes depends on the details, Kenneth Dews might say. As board chairman, he once took a personal risk to help keep the hospital operating. When the air conditioner broke in the early 1970s, surgeons said they needed the system's clean, cool air to keep working. So Dews put himself on the line to get it. "I stood on top of the roof and watched them put it in," he remembers. "I could have ended up paying for it." The hospital board approved it the following Monday. Later, as a Pitt County commissioner, he fostered the medical center's development and supported the controversial, but successful, move to privatization. |
