Cassette Tape Copy Cataloging
These instructions are for copy cataloging of audio cassette tapes. They presume that you already know how to catalog CDs, and only cover the differences between audio cassettes and CDs. These instructions do not cover video cassettes. (Video cassettes have separate instructions.) There are now differences for cataloging cassettes in RDA; if you come across an RDA record for an audio cassette, check with the music cataloger!
007 $a s $b s $d l $e m/q/s/u/z (mono/quad/stereo/unknown/other) $f n $g j $h l $i c (c is for four-track recording. Use c unless it specifically says 2 track. For 2 track use "b") $m c (if Dolby-processed) $n e
245 Title. For cassette tapes, the title must come from the cassette and label, just like it must come from the disc for CDs. If the title comes from elsewhere (such as the container) there must be a 500 note indicating this ("Title from container.")
300 Physical description. This is mostly rote.
1 sound cassette : $b analog, mono.
Sometimes $b may be digital, stereo. or digital, analog or digital, analog, Dolby processed, etc. -- this is OK. If there are multiple cassettes, it will say 2 sound cassettes, etc.
Also notice that there is generally no $c. This is correct.
Make sure it says "sound cassette" and not "sound disc"!! If it does not say "sound cassette," you have the wrong record. It is very common for cassette recordings to have been issued also on CD and/or LP, so check the 300 carefully!
Give the item & bib record to the music cataloger for review. After review, make edits as marked. change 040 to ERED and add 099 CA-####. Most cassette tapes are gifts, so you can use the 949 in Connexion to make an item record (can use audcass constant data), but if it is not a gift make sure to search and overlay brief bib in Symphony. Use CA #s to accession. Because we add so few cassette tapes, cassette numbers are not assigned. Simply check Symphony & the shelves for the last CA # used and continue from that point. Itypes and codes are:
nln 10/15/2007, 11/5/2012 (minor Symphony/MARC updates)
cdh 12/2/2013
