Music Cataloging Procedures
CDs & DVDs -- Physical Processing (i.e. barcoding & stripping)

The task of CD & DVD physical processing is normally performed by a student assistant. These procedures reflect current practice, but some items still bear the mark of past practices, including barcoding sleeves and use of copy numbers. So follow these procedures for current work!

These instructions are for physical processing before cataloging. For instructions on labeling materials after cataloging, see Labeling CDs, DVDs, Books and Scores

1. Get CDs/DVDs from the "media not processed" shelf.

2. Open CD/DVD. Make sure to remove the stickers on the top of the case, and any sticky residue.

3. Tattle-tape the

4. Barcode the booklet and all CD/DVD containers. Place each barcode in the upper right hand corner. (Note: recent CD issues have included small, thin, inserts that nonetheless fit outside the case. Ask the music cataloger or another full-time staff member about how to handle these.)

5. Place the CD/DVDs on the "media with barcodes and strips" shelf, in chronological order. Keep anything rubber banded together, together, and do not discard sticky notes with dates, PO-##, and other info.
