Music Cataloging Procedures
Book Cataloging

Music books are cataloged according to standard cataloging procedures [as of 10/9/2012, available in network drive Joyner/Sharing/TS Procedures/Mono Cataloging], with the exceptions noted below.

1. Music books must be shelflisted. You can assume that the class number is correct, but you must search Symphony to ensure that the cutters group the book correctly on our shelf. This is especially crucial for ML410-ML420 (composer & performer bios.) The first cutter is for the composer/performer and all the books about a specific person need to have the same first cutter to allow browsing.

2. Reference books. The following are red flags for potential music reference books:

a. Bio-bibliography. These are classed in ML134 (not ML410)
b. Call number ML134. Almost all ML134’s will be in reference.
c. If you have any questions about whether a book should be in reference, consult the Assistant Music Librarian for a decision.

3. Music books frequently come with accompanying media. See the Accompanying Media procedures document. You can set up a constant data record to automatically add the 590 to the bib record in Connexion.

4. 049 = EREM

5. Add item records.

a. See the Symphony holding codes document (requires Symphony wiki login)

For general stacks books, the codes are:

Library: JMUSIC
Location: MST
Item type: MGESBK
Item category 1: BOOK
Item category 2: MCIRC
Holding code (for use in Connexion 949): JMUSIC53

6. Automatic stamp at the top of the call number label:

a. Music general stacks:

MusicLib
b. Music reference:

MusicLib
