    Type: vessel
    Ethnic Group: Maasai
    Country: Kenya
    ECU Number: L0159
Description: This gourd vessel has beadwork and an incised design.
Significance researched to date: Calabash gourds were used widely to carry water or palm wine. Bead designs identified the ethnic group or clan. Knots indicated the village it came from, and colors signified the family. Often a shoulder strap was used to carry the gourd, and a small wrapped cloth underneath stabilized it when it was set down.
