    Type: figure
    Ethnic Group: Luba (Baluba)
Country: Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire)
    ECU Number: L0145
Description: This wood female half-figure surmounting a gourd has its hands to the breasts.
Significance researched to date: Calabash gourds were used widely to carry water or palm wine. Bead designs identified the ethnic group or clan. Knots indicated the village it came from, and colors signified the family. Often a shoulder strap was used to carry the gourd, and a small wrapped cloth underneath stabilized it when it was set down.
