Long-time practitioners Fred and Malene Irons, M.D.s, struggled to improve healthcare for the county and area despite considerable political and social obstacles. Malene, along with Andrew Best, M.D., is credited with bringing integration to the hospital when she used an isolette in the whites-only nursery for an African-American baby who was born prematurely.
