Abstract: The periauger was the workboat in the state’s waterways during the 18th- and early 19th-centuries. None of the original boats remain, and only a few sketches depict them. Armed with $100,000 in private donations and a grant from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the Perquimans County Restoration Association, the North Carolina Maritime Museum, and the East Carolina University Marine Studies Program set about constructing a replica. Reynolds describes the building of the periauger and its three-week journey to its home port in Hertford.
