In 1989 the School of Medicine formed the East Carolina University Cancer Center. The Center represented a consolidation and coordination of the clinical and research oncology programs. Dr. James Hallock described the Cancer Center to the Board of Trustees this way: The Center will make available full service, state of the art oncology facilities for patients and physicians of Eastern North Carolina. Diagnostic modalities for all malignancies in children and adults are in place, together with treatment programs including chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy. Within the Center, there are many highly specialized clinical and clinical research programs including intra-operative radiation therapy, hyperthermia, bone marrow transplantation, breast cancer screening, and participation in national protocol groups for the use of combined surgery, radiation and chemotherapy for pediatric and adult cancer. Basic research programs include the study of drug resistance, study of cancer cells with magnetic resonance imaging and specialized cytogenetic and immunologic techniques. The Center will serve as the focus for the continued evolution and development of even more sophisticated state of the art modalities for treatment and diagnosis of cancer. Dissemination of information to all health care providers and education of the general public regarding prevention and other approaches to cancer will also be emphasized. The care rendered will be delivered in an atmosphere of sensitivity for patients and their families with a team approach which includes social workers, nurse specialists, clergy, child life specialists and others.
